I'm a new resident on Maui (AH7S) formerly AA7FL in Marcola, OR.

Just got a ground mounted vertical antenna up this past week and was surprised to hear the bands virtually dead here in the middle of the day.

I know that learning the best times for propagation will take a bit of time playing around on the bands. However, I'd like to see what the other folks around here have to say.

So far, it appears that in the morning 15 meters opens up at about 8:30-9am local time with 20 meters following a bit after that. Activity seems to die down by about 11:30 am local time and then not pick up again til about 3:30 pm local.

When it begins picking up in the afternoon, I've noticed 15 meters and 10 meters are open first. Followed by 20 meters at about 4-4:30.

Alot of this has to do with being in South Kihei with a ground mounted vertical but I'm surprised at the relatively low signal strengths from most areas of the world, other than mainland U.S. Thing is, with this same vertical, also ground mounted in Oregon, I managed 4 of the 5 bands for 5BDXCC (I used a full sized 80 meter delta loop for that band) as well as 5BWAZ.

Anyway, looking forward to getting to know a bunch of folks from this group.

Aloha, Steve AH7S smilewsk@earthlink.net
